Bailment refers to the voluntary delivery or possession of an asset such as property from one party, the ‘bailor’, to another party, the ‘bailee’, with the understanding that the asset will be returned in accordance with the wishes of the bailor. Bailment does not involve the transfer of ownership, with the bailor retaining ownership of the asset. Bailment for reward refers to the type of bailment which is contractual in nature, in which payment is made to the bailee for the possession of the property. An independent valuation can help settle bailment disputes by providing an accurate, unbiased assessment of the market value of the property in question.

Depending on the circumstances, both parties may independently appoint their own valuer, but appointing a single expert will reduce the issues and extra costs which may arise.
